Don't own one but...
« on: November 25, 2009, 03:29:08 PM »
Considering putting in a Turbo motor into my '79 Cutlass Calais.  So thought this would be a good place for info/leads.

I agree with Dr.Olds it's something different and a total sleeper my brother is planning to do the same thing with his 81 monte carlo.  I do know that caspers electronics makes the adapters to your car

You can dress a pig up as race horse but it's still a pig.

Haha I expected someone to react like this.  Thing is, I've seen some pretty convincing pigs in my time.  I like ham sandwiches, pork chops, and bacon.  So instead of buying an overpriced horse, I'll stick with my little piggy that'll go wee wee wee wee all the way home, but do it really fast.

Thanks TRBOPWR; sleeper is what I aim for.  I love the technology involved with the turbo, and I believe the whole 350, 455 business to be overdone.  MPG is always a plus, especially with Alberta enacting new gas laws that will see 5% ethanol added to our pumps.

Being a university student, the funds are tight.  So instead of spending $70 000 on a GNX, or $25 000 on a GN with comparable mileage/condition, I’ll just transplant the powerhouse from a dead car.

I was thinking becoming a member of the local GN board was the best way to deal with people who have experience (more than I do at least) with these motors, and might be there to help with a few part searches (which is actually already the case with TRBOPWR).

Remember, they all started out as pigs. The $70k GNX has the same basic platform design as my 65 Skylark did.

You will have your work cut out for you putting an LC2 in a V8 car. To piece parts together would be madness. Best bet is to find a complete engine with all accessories, sensors, harnesses and ECM. They tend to turn up for a couple of grand, but beware, they are famous for taking out headgaskets and crank bearings with abuse. You could save some money by going with a hot-air setup, but the 200 hp would not be worth the effort (better off to put cam & heads on any old V8.) Trans, diff, etc etc can be added on the side. You will need the V6 motor mounts (still available from Mikkelson's etc for $20 or 30) and a transmission with the BOP bolt pattern.

If all this is greek to you, you probably should stick to a V8. If not, welcome aboard!

I have a pretty complete GN (109 ) motor under my work bench , if you're interested. It should be rebuilt to do it right. At least, that's my thinking, if I were doing it.

It was running reasonably strong when I took it out though.

I'm sure there's a dozen guys in the club that would be willing to assist when needed.

WhiteT:  thanks for the input.  The car already has a stock NA 231, don't ask me why or who in their right mind would order that from the factory.  So the motor mounts and BOP bolt pattern won't be a problem.

oldtimer:  Thanks for the offer.  I'm not quite there as of yet.  Just doing some research and getting some feedback.  I probably won't be looking for a motor until around June, when summer hits.  Just paid for the next term of school, and don't have room in the 'rents garage until the snow goes away (though it hasn't even come yet).

Glad to know there's help when I need it though.  Thanks guys!
